Two Rembrandt Avenue stalwarts have left us/ Deux figures emblématiques de l’avenue Rembrandt nous ont quittés

Two of my distinguished constituents on Rembrandt Avenue passed away in September. As the city councillor for District 2 for 21 years now, you get to know the folks you represent, and it is very hard to get to the news they are no longer with us.

David Haltrecht, 87, had a deep love for family and helping others and took pride in his work with the Côte Saint-Luc Men’s Club.  He was an engineer and at the forefront of software development, had a lifelong passion for sailing, and in his eighties developed a love of building and flying drones.  David communicated with me often and always had solid advice.

“His friendship and mentoring me about computers, running the Men’s Club meant a great deal to me and I will treasure the memories we share,” said David Gandell. “David was the glue that kept the club together and its success today is a tribute to David.”

Charles Eklove worked with Haltrecht at the Men’s Club for over a decade. “He was quiet, knowledgeable, capable and caring,” he remarked. “Whenever I asked for his counsel, he was very willing to help and always provided an appreciated input.”

Morris Stelcner, the president of the club,  notes that he just picked Haltrecht up three weeks ago and took him to the Annual General Meeting. “I cannot believe that he is gone,” he said. “His friendship, warmth, and presence enriched the lives of those who had the pleasure of knowing him.”

Norman Fisher was an avid tennis player who called and e-mailed me often. His favorite spot was the courts at Rembrandt Park. Even this past summer, when I would pass by his game, he’d stop to recognize my presence and do some lobbying.

In fact, here is an e-mail he sent me very recently.

“I am writing to you as you suggested last Saturday in your usual walk through Rembrandt Park,” he shared. “There used to be two park benches where people could sit while waiting for their time on the courts or to watch their children having lessons or watch their husbands playing tennis. These have been removed and should be returned.   On the positive side the water fountain,  which is what I campaigned for  over the years, allows  water bottles to be filled as well as take a mouthful from the lower fountain.”

Rest in Peace Norman and I assure you those recommendations were submitted our Public Works Department.

“ Norm was my tennis buddy for 30 years,” commented former CSL Councillor Allan J. Levine. “ Norm never missed an appointment. He was  always eager to help with my game,  especially my serve. We shared many wonderful outings and I will miss his unique humour.”
