Stop sign on Kildare and Rembrandt made permanent

I am pleased to report that a permanent stop sign has been placed at the corner of Rembrandt Avenue and Kildare Road and we can indirectly thank Hydro-Québec for that.

When major Hydro work began on Merrimac Road last spring, it was made a one way street proceeding to Rembrandt because of the narrow path for vehicles to  travel on. I immediately asked for and received  a temporary stop sign on the side of Rembrandt and Kildare coming from Cavendish.

The new permanent stop sign.

Back in 2018 I was successful in persuading our Mobility Committee and Urban Development  Department  to install a stop sign on the other side of Rembrandt and Kildare. People immediately asked, “why not both sides?” Due to the high volume of cars turning onto Kildare eastbound from Cavendish, our Mobility Committee wanted to avoid a potential back-up onto Cavendish as a consequence of cars stopping at Rembrandt.

While this measure did improve things for vehicles turning from Rembrandt, it was only a half measure as they had to be  very mindful of looking  left to see if any traffic was coming their way in order to avoid an accident.

Over the past six months I spent a lot of time observing the intersection and as Hydro work winded down and I asked the Mobility Committee to please consider making the stop sign permanently. I would like to thank Mayor David  Tordjman and Mobility Committee Chair Mitch Kujavsky for helping to push this through. It is a winning development for all motorists and pedestrians in the area, including those who travel back and forth to JPPS-Bialik and Beth Chabad CSL.

A few years ago I got the Montreal Transit Commission to move the bus stop at Rembrandt and Kildare back several feet, avoiding a blind spot affecting motorists.

So to the very many constituents who contacted me over the past several months, lobbying for a permanent stop sign I can happily conclude by saying “Mission Accomplished.”
