Who are the culprits getting their jollies by vandalizing the main Côte Saint-Luc Dog Run on Mackle Road?
Every day year-round dog owners convene at this venue to let their canines run free. As the city councillor responsible for Animal Protection, I have been fortunate to be able to count on two devoted individuals in Anna Katz and Jonathan Goldman to steer the ship. We also have a smaller dog run on Côte St. Luc Road, near the golf course. Over the years we have worked on important changes to the dogs by-law, ensured that the owners of dangerous dogs are dealt with, coordinated an active Central Bark Facebook page and more,
It is inexplicable to understand what the motive of the vandals are. They appear to come in the middle of the night and do things like throw chairs and shovels over the fence, or simply break them. They have burnt holes in the tent that dog owners use to sit under to brave the cold, rubbed feces on the chairs and tents and even urinated on them. This sick behavior clearly perpetrated by people who hate animals.
Anna and Jonathan share that the seemingly daily acts of vandalism has significantly impacted park usage and cleanliness and impacted their mental well-being. “I have purchased over 20 shovels for the park this year,” Jonathan reports. “Every night someone comes and either physically tries to break them or just throws them over the fence. I have retrieved these shovels from the CN-CP side of the fence over 30 times this year, just for the person to come back at night and throw themà over or try to break them the next day. When I say retrieve that means I climb a jagged fence, rip my jacket or jeans in the process and dig for the shovels so I can throw them back in the park. I have repaired the tent three times from the holes being burned into it. I have acquired numerous plastic chairs and brought them to the park. Others have also donated chairs to the park and they are all gone now. I then arrive at the park with chairs occasionally destroyed into pieces on purpose.”
Furthermore, Jonathan and Anna report that the vandals have taken the poop bins and poured the contents into a yellow utility bin where dog owners keep water bottles, poop bags and salt and dirt to avoid slipping. “This is just disgusting,” Jonathan states. “Since there were no shovels I brought 50 poop bags, which this person the next day decided was great for wrapping around the chairs last month and throwing the rest of my bags across the fence to the yards.
The Dog Owners Committee leaders worry about the elderly people who do not have a proper tent to sit in while the disappearance of the shovels makes it impossible for the volunteers to clear the snow in case of an emergency.
I raised the matter at our city council meeting last week and Mayor David Tordjman was quick to ensure that we will step action and try to catch these perpetrators. I also spoke to Director of Public Safety Philip Chateauvert. “Since September, we have given special attention to the dog run and our agents have attended the site 107 times during that period, both proactively and in response to issues,” he told me. “The majority of incidents appear to occur after 11 p.m. We continue targeted patrols, especially during those hours, but it’s not realistic to maintain a constant presence on site.”
I will continue to follow up on this issue but right now I am calling on all citizens who drive or walk by the dog run at any hour of the day or night and keep their eyes open. I’d also like to see our Volunteer Citizens on Patrol to do the same. And I think it is time we get the police involved. These cowards should be ashamed of themselves and brought to justice!

J’ai récupéré ces pelles du côté CN-CP de la clôture plus de 30 fois cette année, mais la personne revient la nuit pour les jeter par-dessus ou essayer de les casser le lendemain. Quand je dis récupérer, cela signifie que je grimpe sur une clôture dentelée, que je déchire ma veste ou mon jean et que je creuse pour trouver les pelles afin de les rejeter dans le parc. J’ai réparé la tente trois fois à cause des trous qui y ont été brûlés. J’ai acheté de nombreuses chaises en plastique et les ai apportées au parc. D’autres personnes ont également fait don de chaises au parc, mais elles ont toutes disparu aujourd’hui. J’arrive ensuite au parc avec des chaises parfois délibérément détruites en morceaux. »
De plus, Jonathan et Anna rapportent que les vandales ont pris les poubelles à crottes et ont vidé leur contenu dans une poubelle jaune où les propriétaires de chiens gardent des bouteilles d’eau, des sacs à crottes, du sel et de la terre pour éviter de glisser. « C’est tout simplement dégoûtant », déclare Jonathan. « Comme il n’y avait pas de pelles, j’ai apporté 50 sacs à crottes, que cette personne le lendemain a décidé d’utiliser pour envelopper les chaises le mois dernier et jeter le reste de mes sacs par-dessus la clôture dans les jardins.
Les responsables du comité des propriétaires de chiens s’inquiètent pour les personnes âgées qui n’ont pas de tente appropriée pour s’asseoir, tandis que la disparition des pelles empêche les bénévoles de déblayer la neige en cas d’urgence.
