Sushi Shop: A Fresh Take on Takeout and Delivery
For years I had walked or driven past Sushi Shop (www.sushishop.com) locations without stepping inside. With our family relying exclusively on take-out and delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic, we finally decided to try it—and what a pleasant surprise the entire experience was. 2020 marked Sushi Shop’s 20th anniversary, and owned by the MTY Group, there are now 165 locations across Canada. The menu is full of innovative creations appealing to both devoted sushi fans and newcomers alike.
Prepared fresh with care, Sushi Shop products deliver great flavor and superior freshness. Popular selections include poke bowls, sushi tacos, and blossom and temari collections, among a wide variety of unique creations. I called in my order at 5:10 pm on a Saturday and was told it would be ready in 30 minutes. When I arrived, everything was neatly packaged and ready to go.
Our Order Highlights
We started with the Umami poke bowl with crispy sticky rice. Beautifully presented like a tartare, poke bowls come with a choice of white rice, brown rice, crispy sticky rice, or lettuce. Shared three ways, every bite was delicious.

The sushi pizza features a crispy rice and cheese crust, served with sauces like spicy light mayo, soy, sesame, or Yin Yang. We chose the pizza topped with lobster, crab, shrimp, mango, red masago, green onion, and sesame.
In the temari section, we ordered the Bomb, with Japanese mayo, teriyaki sauce, sesame, Japanese spices, crab, shrimp, mozzarella, and spicy light mayo. For maki, we tried the Black Mamba, containing shrimp tempura, salmon, kanikama, red and black masago, spicy light mayo, Japanese mayo, and green onion. The Sumomaki Rainbow featured tuna, salmon, avocado, green onion, cucumber, tempura, and spicy light mayo in five large rolls.
From the blossom section, we sampled the Volcano Mini (eight pieces) with torch-seared salmon, avocado, tempura, red masago, spicy light mayo, sesame, and soy sheet. We also enjoyed the Phoenix (six pieces) with popcorn shrimp, kanikama, avocado, crispy sweet potato strings, tempura, red masago, sesame sauce, spicy light mayo, Japanese spices, sesame, and rice paper.
Finally, the Tartare Maki Tuna was slightly spicy and crispy, featuring tuna, tempura, lettuce, cucumber, carrot, green onion, spicy light mayo, spicy sauce, orange masago, sesame, all wrapped in rice paper.
New Offerings
Some items were unavailable that night, including sushi tacos. Sushi Shop continues to roll out new items such as the Maki Green Crush, Combo Bamboo, and two new poke bowls made with their new bamboo rice, which is light, delicate, and packed with nutrients like vitamin B and antioxidants. All rolls, poke bowls, and combos can be made with this rice.
