Antisemitic and racist vandalism hits Côte Saint-Luc apartment building

The Equinoxe Rental Condos on Marc Chagall Avenue, located within my District 2,  have been targeted and attacked with very offensive and disturbing vandalism is the past few days. Someone has defaced the elevators one of the two towers with racist words and phrases, as well as another section of the same tower, and some walls of the fifth floor.

Disturbing and disgusting racial vocabulary has been scrawled these areas. The latest attack is a swastika engraved in the frame of an elevator.

The first instance was on Thursday or Friday, Feb 27 or 28 . A number of racial slurs aimed at African-American residents appeared in the elevator. Once this was reported, they were cleaned off almost immediately, but pictures were taken beforehand.

Since then, there have been sporadic repeat occurrences. Police were called and an investigation is underway. The latest incident was on Thursday. Once again police were called to examine the vandalism.

The Equinoxe opened in the summer of 2018. Its twin towers are occupied predominantly by Jewish residents. To see these kind of acts in a residential apartment building is uncommon and rare in Côte Saint-Luc and we will do our very best to get to the bottom of this.

This news comes at a time when our provincial government plans to adopt Bill 94, which will ban the wearing of ANY religious symbols by all staff and volunteers in the public school system. It makes Bill 21, which only applied to teachers, look tame. While the CAQ government has been a strong supporter of Israel, Bill 94 is contradictory to that and will only encourage people to undertake acts like we have seen at the Equinoxe.  After all, if you wear a kipa you are no longer allowed to do if you want to work or volunteer in the public education system.

Mayor Mitchell Brownstein and I will be meeting with residents on Monday night, accompanied by Mount Royal Liberal MP Anthony Housefather. See this story in The Gazette.
