My interview with Jorge Garcia from Lost and Hawaii 5-0

As a huge fan of the series Lost, it was a big thrill to interview Daniel Dae-Kim a few years ago when he landed on the reboot of Hawaii 5-0 on CBS and Global TV. Now came my opportunity to chat with Jorge Garcia, who played Hurley on Lost. He has now joined the cast of 5-0 as a regular.

Here is a recording of my interview with him. Just click on the arrow. Below that is a hilarious compilation of his use of the word “dude” on Lost – a subject he talks to me about.

Hurley “Dude” Compilation

Six seasons of Hurley saying “dude” on Lost.

Transcript

- So I went and I I googled a Hawaii five oh on YouTube and I watched an old episode
- You know probably 30 years old and it was so amazing but to watch it now after watching the Hawaii five oh
- Last five years you see I mean they're completely different, but you see like a different
- Garrett and different Dano, but still it was a pretty clever show for those days if you ever have a moment to watch it
- You'll get a real kick at about I have to tell you
- Yeah, there's like a Jack Lord
- Yeah, but at the mall here. Oh, yeah, you know a few times. Yeah
- The other thing I wanted to ask you is another show that I started watching that sort of helped my my
- My lost my missing lost was is once upon a time and there you were
- Yeah, someone's upon a time and played a very interesting. How did you enjoy that experience?
- That was great. That was a lot of fun. It's a really great group of people on that show. Yeah
- Very very fun and welcoming. We're like, you know, even if I was coming in to
- Just work on that show for like a week
- Yeah, you know, they would come up with little like activities that we do we'd go we didn't they like go-car racing
- It's like that. Wow. Yeah, a lot of fun
- Did you ever think that you'd be a series regular on that one because it looked at one point like you might be
- It was hard it's hard to tell I mean I they had they have a huge
- Ensemble of actors that they work with yeah, and it just kind of seemed like
- There
- There'd be other people that would be offered the regular gig first in my in my opinion
- Right, so I didn't hold my breath just kind of like, you know, when everyone would show up it'd be kind of fun
- It's it's the most I was just like we shot
- Alcatraz I'm Vancouver
- But I was kind of just kind of missed
- Vancouver as like a place to live on top it. Yeah, yeah, I have family there and it's a beautiful place Vancouver
- It's fine. Yes, and it's a really nice place. Yeah, what's her name?
- I think Grace Park is from there who's who said yeah, yeah, I think she's from Vancouver
- In fact, they yeah, they waited filmed some episodes last year when she had paternity leave because
- They she couldn't leave so they actually went to Vancouver and filmed some scenes there. I remember oh no kid
- Yeah, yeah, exactly the the I found that once upon a time there's a lot of similarities to lost
- It reminds me a lot about lost and in the way it's written of course
- It's some former lost people who are in charge of it. So that's why but it's it's got it's to me
- It's the closest thing that's been made since lost lost went off the air
- Yeah, and the guys and created what's a time Eddie and Adam they were
- They're big
- Parts to the early story because they they're kind of in many ways the key part of yeah
- Hurley's story and they because they broke most of the episodes
- Yeah, the hurley's backstores. Yeah, so let me ask you. I'll conclude on this note and just asking more about Hawaii 50
- Had you watched the show at all before you got on it and like what do you think of the show in general?
- I mean, it's a real hit five years even on Friday nights the deathbed
- It's a success on Friday nights even when it's really impressive like
- It's definitely I feel expanded
- The demographic of people who come up to me for sure. Oh, yeah
- Yeah, cuz I got like getting approached about why if I though it's like oh
- It's it's a wider range of people. It definitely seems to have have fans of all kinds of
- Uh
- I don't know like walked by it and types and stuff like that
- It's funny. Yeah, I mean and I'm when I was I
- Haven't to be in Hawaii when they were having their premiere on something on the beach like the first the
- Yeah, their first season. So I was able to go and hang out with Daniel and go see that
- Now it's cool. I mean it's it's it's a
- Sun show to
- That's a gunplay. Yeah, lots of gunplay exactly, but it really is a success story and what I mean, I guess it's always there
- It's it's an interesting because it's drama
- It's suspense and it's light they always have like that usually there's always some
- Side story that's like comedy like a joke, you know, someone's getting murdered
- But the next thing, you know, they're Daniel's making a joke or they're making fun of uh, you know
- McGarrot or something like that. So it's it's a really an interesting way of doing a show
- Yeah, I mean
- Yeah, there is like kind of that aspect of
- any job you have
- the
- Certain lightness and stuff that enters in regardless of how dark or how you know
- Heavy the material that your job is kind of like when you look at like the stuff
- The lightness how I like mashed would go from very serious war stuff. Yeah, and then light stuff
- Go back and forth and I think that's
- the very in a way a real experience
- Yeah, well, I'm really looking forward to seeing seeing your character this year and I hope one day you come and film a movie or
- Sunday a Montreal second-meetian person because I'm a heavy pun
- So if that ever happens, you give me a heads up and as one of my stories appear
- I'll email them to you and I'll be talking to Peter soon as well
- So I'll make sure to continue my cheerleading for her for not early. I know you're not early
- Be always be hurly to me, but I'll but I'll I'll
- I'll make sure to continue my cheerleading for a Jorge. How do you pronounce your your first name? It's pronounced so many different ways on TV
- Jorge Jorge Jorge, okay
- Jorge as in like a H. R. H. Y.
- Okay, all right perfect. Well, listen, I really appreciate you giving me the time good luck and
- Hopefully we'll talk to you again soon
- All right. Thanks. Take care. Bye-bye
