I express appreciation for my acclamation to Côte Saint-Luc City Council
I am pleased to announce that I have been acclaimed for my sixth term as the city councillor for District 2 in Côte Saint-Luc. Nominations closed today for the November 2 elections.
This marks the fourth time that the voters have given me such an honor to be elected automatically and not face the ballot box. The other times I won by margins of 92 percent and 81 percent. I certainly took nothing for granted. My door-to-door campaign literally proceeds throughout my four year mandate. However, it does intensify after Labour Day during an election year. I want to thank all of my supporters, notably my family and in particular my official agent and campaign manager Reuben Spector. At 87 years young he has a perfect record of 6-0. Reuben is also my father-in-law and I could not dream of a more supportive individual. I express extreme gratitude to my wife and daughter for supporting my political career; full disclosure, it was my wife who persuaded me to run more than two decades ago and she has continued to serve as an invaluable advisor and sounding board. A role like this does not only demand that I sacrifice family time, but I am a moving target for constituents wherever we go. Thanks to my mother-in-law Shirley and my mom Elaine. Shirley has worked the phones for me over the years. In her younger days, my mom even went door to door.
Congratulations to Lior Azerad, who was acclaimed in District 6. We still have an election for mayor and in six districts. I wish everyone the best of luck. Please go out and vote!
Some people have asked me why there would be acclamations. For starters, I would like to think in my case it is a vote of confidence that I have done a good job. I make it a point to be extremely interactive with all of my constituents, be it via in person visits, phone calls, e-mails, Zoom meetings or social media. I have this website (which has just been relaunched) where I try to keep residents up to date on goings on. People can follow me on Facebook, Instagram and X. I even do a Côte Saint-Luc-centric podcast.
But there are other reasons why more people do not come forward. To begin with, running an election campaign is no easy task, even if you get acclaimed. You have to conduct door to door at least five nights a week (and often afternoons as well on Sunday). Your official agent (sometimes it is the candidate who fulfils this duty as well) must endure a three hour virtual training session and exam, neither of which is easy. A bank account has to be set up, accompanied by more training, You need to fundraise to support the expenses of the campaign. Posters, flyers and online material are not cheap. Volunteers are required, including many on advance poll and election day. Some people who have run unsuccessfully in the past told me they will never go through this process again.
Let me share something else important. Elected officials at the municipal level are the targets of abuse, notably online. In this last mandate I have seen it worse than ever. Some of the cyberbullies out there are relentless and you need a strong backbone to put up with it.
Despite all of this, I find the job of a city councillor to be very rewarding. It is nice to be able to effect change. My enthusiasm has not dwindled and I look forward to serving again for the next four years.

Je suis heureux d’annoncer que j’ai été nommé pour un sixième mandat en tant que conseiller municipal du district 2 de Côte Saint-Luc. Les candidatures pour les élections du 2 novembre ont été clôturées aujourd’hui.
C’est la quatrième fois que les électeurs m’accordent cet honneur d’être élu automatiquement sans passer par un scrutin. Les autres fois, j’ai remporté 92 % et 81 % des voix. Je n’ai certainement rien pris pour acquis. Ma campagne de porte-à-porte se poursuit littéralement tout au long de mon mandat de quatre ans. Cependant, elle s’intensifie après la fête du Travail pendant une année électorale. Je tiens à remercier tous mes partisans, notamment ma famille et en particulier mon agent officiel et directeur de campagne, Reuben Spector. À 87 ans, il affiche un bilan parfait de 6-0. Reuben est également mon beau-père et je ne pourrais rêver d’une personne plus solidaire. J’exprime ma profonde gratitude à ma femme et à ma fille pour leur soutien dans mon rôle de politicien. Un tel rôle m’oblige non seulement à être plus souvent absent de la maison, mais je suis également une cible mouvante pour les électeurs partout où nous allons. Merci à ma belle-mère Shirley et à ma mère Elaine. Shirley a travaillé au téléphone pour moi pendant des années. Dans sa jeunesse, ma mère a même fait du porte-à-porte.

Certaines personnes m’ont demandé pourquoi il y avait des élections sans opposition. Pour commencer, j’aime à penser que dans mon cas, il s’agit d’un vote de confiance pour le travail que j’ai accompli. Je m’efforce d’être extrêmement interactif avec tous mes électeurs, que ce soit par des visites en personne, des appels téléphoniques, des courriels, des réunions Zoom ou les réseaux sociaux. J’ai ce site web (qui vient d’être relancé) où j’essaie de tenir les résidents informés de l’actualité. Les gens peuvent me suivre sur Facebook, Instagram et X. Je réalise même un podcast consacré à Côte Saint-Luc.
Mais il y a d’autres raisons pour lesquelles peu de noms se présentent. Tout d’abord, mener une campagne électorale n’est pas une tâche facile, même si vous êtes acclamé. Vous devez faire du porte-à-porte au moins cinq soirs par semaine (et souvent aussi les après-midis du dimanche). Votre agent officiel (qui est parfois le candidat) doit suivre une formation virtuelle de trois heures et passer un examen, ce qui n’est pas facile. Il faut ouvrir un compte bancaire. Il faut collecter des fonds pour financer les dépenses de la campagne. Les affiches, les dépliants et le matériel en ligne ne sont pas bon marché. Il faut des bénévoles, notamment pour le vote par anticipation et le jour du scrutin. Certaines personnes qui se sont présentées sans succès dans le passé m’ont dit qu’elles ne se lanceraient plus jamais dans cette aventure.
Permettez-moi de partager autre chose d’important. Les élus municipaux sont la cible d’abus, notamment en ligne. Au cours de ce dernier mandat, j’ai constaté que la situation était pire que jamais. Les cyberintimidateurs sont implacables et il faut avoir les épaules solides pour y faire face.
Malgré tout cela, je trouve que le travail de conseiller municipal est très gratifiant. C’est agréable de pouvoir apporter des changements. Mon enthousiasme n’a pas faibli et je me réjouis à l’idée de servir à nouveau pendant les quatre prochaines années.
