On Monday evening, November 24, 2025, the mayor and eight members of Côte Saint-Luc city council were formally sworn into office at a modest ceremony at City Hall. We then got right into business amd held our first public council meeting.
We have a new mayor in David Tordjman. Seven of the eight councillors are back: myself, Oren Sebag, Steven Erdelyi, Mitchell Kujavsky, Lior Azerad, Sidney Benizri and Andee Shuster. Mayor Tordjman succeeds Mitchell Brownstein while Jamie Fabian took the race in District 3, filling the spot of Dida Berku.
First a word of thanks to Mitchell Brownstein and Dida Berku. Mitchell served on council and mayor for a total of 35 years. I take some ownership in this. When I was covering Côte Saint-Luc City Hall for The Suburban and The Monitor, I encouraged my friend Mitchell to get involved in municipal politics. A lawyer by profession, he started to attend meetings. At one point I spoke to then Councillor Eric Helfield. He had confided in me that he was ready to retire. I recommended he tap Mitchell as his successor. Almost immediately, he agreed. Helfield’s endorsement carried the necessary punch Mitchell needed. He went on to enjoy a successful career representing District 7. Ten years ago Anthony Housefather stepped down as mayor and became the Federal Liberal MP for Mount Royal. Mitchell was the obvious choice to fill his shoes and he ran uncontested in a by-election. He face challenges from Robert Libman in 2017 and Tordjman in 2021, winning both votes handily. The most recent election was a different story. Tordjman was back on the ballot and in the end he won by seven votes via a recount.
I wish to commend Mitchell for his dedication to the job and our community. He became a full-time mayor, stepping away from duties at his law practice , steered us through COVID-19 and had a very strong presence. I must also mention his wife Elaine, whom I called “the first lady,” for she supported him every step of the way. There was not an event nor a council meeting where Elaine was absent.
What can I say about Dida? It is hard for me to believe she will not be sitting on council anymore. A noted tenants rights lawyer and activist, she took on so many files you could always find her at City Hall meeting with staff and strategizing. Her departure leaves a huge void. Like Mitchell, she devoted 35 years of her life to this council.
All I can say is that Mitchell and Dida represent two prize free agents whom I am certain a lot of organizations in this city will want to recruit.
Mayor Tordjman has named Councillor Lior Azerad as Deputy Mayor. While Lior was only elected for the first time four years ago, he has proven himself to be skilled politician. He and I were the only members of council to be acclaimed to office.
Our council must now prepare to adopt a budget next month and proceed as well with the passage of the master plan we have been working on for the past four years.

Le lundi soir 24 novembre 2025, le maire et les huit membres du conseil municipal de Côte Saint-Luc ont officiellement prêté serment lors d’une cérémonie modeste à l’hôtel de ville. Nous nous sommes ensuite immédiatement mis au travail et avons tenu notre première réunion publique du conseil.
Nous avons un nouveau maire, David Tordjman. Sept des huit conseillers sont de retour : moi-même, Oren Sebag, Steven Erdelyi, Mitchell Kujavsky, Lior Azerad, Sidney Benizri et Andee Shuster. Le maire Tordjman succède à Mitchell Brownstein, tandis que Jamie Fabian a remporté la course dans le district 3, remplaçant Dida Berku.
Tout d’abord, je tiens à remercier Mitchell Brownstein et Dida Berku. Mitchell a siégé au conseil municipal et occupé le poste de maire pendant 35 ans au total. J’y suis pour quelque chose. Lorsque je couvrais l’actualité de la mairie de Côte Saint-Luc pour The Suburban et The Monitor, j’ai encouragé mon ami Mitchell à s’impliquer dans la politique municipale. Avocat de profession, il a commencé à assister aux réunions. À un moment donné, j’ai parlé à Eric Helfield, alors conseiller municipal. Il m’avait confié qu’il était prêt à prendre sa retraite. Je lui ai recommandé de choisir Mitchell comme successeur. Il a presque immédiatement accepté. Le soutien de Helfield a donné à Mitchell l’élan dont il avait besoin. Il a ensuite mené une carrière couronnée de succès en tant que représentant du district 7. Il y a dix ans, Anthony Housefather a démissionné de son poste de maire et est devenu député libéral fédéral de Mont-Royal. Mitchell était le choix évident pour lui succéder et il s’est présenté sans opposition à une élection partielle. Il a été confronté à Robert Libman en 2017 et à Tordjman en 2021, remportant haut la main les deux scrutins. La dernière élection a été différente. Tordjman était de nouveau candidat et a finalement remporté l’élection avec sept voix d’avance après un recomptage.
Je tiens à féliciter Mitchell pour son dévouement à son travail et à notre communauté. Il est devenu maire à temps plein, abandonnant ses fonctions au sein de son cabinet d’avocats, nous a guidés à travers la COVID-19 et a fait preuve d’une très forte présence. Je dois également mentionner sa femme Elaine, que j’appelais « la première dame », car elle l’a soutenu à chaque étape. Il n’y a pas eu un seul événement ou une seule réunion du conseil municipal où Elaine était absente.
Que dire de Dida ? J’ai du mal à croire qu’elle ne siégera plus au conseil. Avocate et militante renommée pour la défense des droits des locataires, elle s’est occupée d’un si grand nombre de dossiers qu’on la trouvait toujours à l’hôtel de ville, en réunion avec le personnel et en train d’élaborer des stratégies. Son départ laisse un vide immense. Comme Mitchell, elle a consacré 35 ans de sa vie à ce conseil.
Tout ce que je peux dire, c’est que Mitchell et Dida représentent deux agents libres de choix que, j’en suis certain, de nombreuses organisations de cette ville voudront recruter.
Le maire Tordjman a nommé le conseiller Lior Azerad au poste de maire adjoint. Bien que Lior n’ait été élu pour la première fois qu’il y a quatre ans, il a prouvé qu’il était un politicien compétent. Lui et moi étions les seuls membres du conseil à avoir été élus sans opposition.
Notre conseil doit maintenant se préparer à adopter un budget le mois prochain et à procéder à l’adoption du plan directeur sur lequel nous travaillons depuis quatre ans.
